JOHN TAYLOR HIGH SCHOOL
ADMISSIONS POLICY SEPTEMBER 2009 INTAKE
Planned Admissions Level
The Planned Admissions Level for each year 7 entry is 224.
This level has been decided by the Local Authority for the 2009 entry. This number may be exceeded at the discretion of the Governors, but they are not obliged to accept pupils in excess of this number unless parents have won their case in a Local Authority Appeal procedure. (Governors are aware of the limited number of classrooms and restricted space of the school premises, and do not feel that it is in the interest of pupils for there to be overcrowding).
Admissions Policy
The school will follow the Admissions Policy for schools of the Staffordshire Education Authority. (This may be obtained from the County Offices at Tipping Street , Stafford . Tel: 01785 223121). The priorities for admission to the school, in order, will be:
- Pupils whose statutory statement of special need names the preferred school as the most appropriate mainstream school that meets the pupil’s needs.
- Children residing within the traditional ‘catchment’ area (broadly, Barton-under-Needwood, Walton-on-Trent, Edingale, Alrewas, Yoxall, Hoar Cross, Newborough, Hanbury, Anslow, Tatenhill, Rangemore and the area west of Shobnall). Kings Bromley has been added from 2008.
- Pupils who at the time of the application have an elder brother or sister in attendance at the school, who will still be attending at the proposed admission date.
- Pupils who satisfy both of the following tests:-
- they are distinguished from the great majority of other applicants either on medical grounds which are supported by a medical report (obtained by parents), specifying the medical advantage of the child attending the preferred school compared with the normal catchment area school, or by other exceptional circumstances material to the choice of school (i.e. the circumstances of the child, not the economic or social circumstances of the parents);
- they would suffer hardship if they were unable to attend the school.
In the event of over subscription, places would be offered in accordance with the Authority’s Admission Policy detailed below.
- Other pupils arranged in order of priority according to how near their home addresses are to the school. Distance is measured by the nearest practical walking route and is determined by use of a computerised system.
(Free transport is normally provided only to those aged 11-16 from the ‘catchment’ area and who live more than 3 miles from the school).
Looked after children falling into any of the categories (b – e) above will be given first priority for places within that category.
Admission Procedure
Admissions will be handled in the first place by the Local Authority Schools Admissions Officers who issue preliminary letters before Christmas each year and make the final allocations after consultation with the school if the number exceeds 224.
Parents whose request for a place for their child is not accepted may appeal to the Local Authority, stating their grounds for appeal.
It is the Governors’ policy to avoid any form of discrimination on grounds of a child’s ability, religion or race. The school will attempt to make provision for children with disabilities.
Entry later than September, Year 7
Parents moving to the area, or those who wish to move their child to the school, should contact the Headteacher. Places are only assured for those within the ‘catchment’ area.
Early Entry
Parents occasionally wish their child to enter the school a year early. They should discuss this with the child’s Headteacher. An Educational Psychologist’s report is required.
