Where are they now?

We hope your visit to our engineering website has been informative and possibly inspired you to get involved. Should you require any further information on anything contained within this website then please contact Mike Baker at the school.

The current location of past students shown below is correct as of June 2005.

Does the Engineering Education Scheme work? The following information suggests it certainly does.

1998-1999
Tom Lane
After gaining good A-Level results in Physics, Maths and Technology, Tom left JTHS in 2000 to study Mechanical Engineering at Nottingham University . In 2002 he took a year in industry working at Jaguar Cars on their undergraduate placement scheme on fuel systems design and development team as a development engineer.
‘The placement provided me with an excellent insight into development engineering in the automotive industry and greatly improved my skills and engineering knowledge, which I could apply to the later part of my degree.’
In Sept 2003 he returned to University changing his degree slightly to Mechanical Design, Manufacture and Materials. During the summer vacation of 2004, he managed to join Bentley Motor Cars on a summer placement working within engineering project management.
He completed his degree working on a research project in partnership with Rolls-Royce Aerospace and graduated in August 2005 with a Beng Hons Degree in Mechanical Design, Manufacture and Materials. Tom has since returned to Bentley Motor Cars in a full time position within Engineering Project Management.
"The EES is a fantastic way to experience ‘real life‘ engineering within a real working environment. I developed many new skills during the scheme which I will be able to utilise throughout my career. The scheme was really the first pillar stone for me in terms of deciding exactly where I wanted my future career to develop. The scheme also shows to potential employers that you are keen to move in engineering and took every opportunity to gain as much experience as possible. Good experience is as valuable as having fantastic qualifications; starting at an early age of your career with the EES will make you a cut above the rest in the future. I would strongly recommend the scheme to anybody wishing to take a career in engineering."

1999-2000
Jenny Harrison
Jenny is studying MEng Mechanical and Materials at Birmingham University sponsored by Land Rover and is currently on an exchange year in Sydney at UNSW. Last year she won one of the Royal Academy of Engineering Leadership Awards and through this is undertaking a 'WILD2' leadership and teambuilding course on Dartmoor next September.
"I think taking part in the EES really encouraged me to be successful in engineering, I met loads of friends and it showed me there are so many exciting possibilities available in engineering for anyone who is willing to go for it."

2000 - 2001
Russell Kelly
Approaching the end of his third year, Russell is reading Chemical Engineering (MEng Hons) at Bath University . His fourth year is an industrial placement and he is about to start his year with DuPont Tijin Films in Wilton , Middlesborough. He is also Chief Engineer for the student television station, an elected committee position which he has held for two years.
He intends taking a career in either petrochemical or pharmaceutical industries.
"The EES was my first introduction to 'real life' engineering and provided me with basic experience in project management and leadership skills. I was able to take these skills with me to university which helped during my first three years. The scheme also helped in my decision to switch from electronics and pursue chemical engineering.
The EES is a great experience and the residential week at Birmingham was probably the highlight of my sixth form career, building and testing a prototype rig for our proposed solution. EES is an unforgettable experience, worth every minute, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone wishing to pursue a career in engineering."

2001 - 2002
Tom Steer
Tom is studying for a degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bradford and intends to work in the automotive industry.
"EES was fantastic, it helped me develop both academically and personally."

Jamie Hardgrove
Jamie is studying for a degree in Business Computing at Leeds Metropolitan University and hopes to work in computer architecture, networks and possibly internet systems development.
"The EES was a valuable experience, if you have the opportunity to take part in it
"
I suggest you do."

2002 - 2003
David Chapman
David is currently working on The Year in Industry scheme with GKN Autostructures and hopes to move to Loughborough University to follow a 3yr BEng course.
"Whilst at the EES Celebration day I was introduced to the Year in Industry Scheme and asked to attend an interview with GKN."

Following on from his success in the The Regional Contribution to Industry Award in June 2005 David went to the Finals in London and came in the top six of over six hundred students.

2003 - 2004
Ryan Short  - Mechanical Engineering Design University of Bristol
"This is a great scheme to get involved in and provides a springboard to bigger and better things. It gives students a real insight into engineering as well as experience of the type of interesting and diverse careers an engineering qualification can bring. I personally feel the scheme helped me to improve several skill areas including leadership, organisation, time management, motivation and team work. The scheme also provided me with useful links and career advice."

Todd Holden BSc - Aeronautical Engineering University of Swansea.
"The EES introduced me to new areas of engineering which otherwise I would have dismissed and I really enjoyed my time working in the team."

Andrew Dumelow - Aeronautical Engineering University of Bristol

Christopher Bottoms - Automotive Design Coventry University

2004 -2005
Daniel Page
Daniel is further studying at JTHS into his second year and wants to continue his ambitions at university, possibly in mechanical engineering or design." Through the EES I gained teamwork and an insight into the world of engineering. It was a fun experience and I am looking forward to studying engineering in a greater depth"

James Thorpe
James is continuing his studies at JTHS next year and hopes to study an engineering related subject at university followed by a career in engineering.
"I gained invaluable experience from participating in the Engineering Education Scheme, as well as finding it an enjoyable experience."
